The Math of the Mountains Project
Project Abstract Math of the Mountains was a partnership among the University of Virginia's College at Wise Center for Teaching Excellence, the Southwest Virginia Public Education Consortium, nineteen school divisions in Southwest Virginia, Breaks Interstate Park, Claytor Lake State Park, Natural Tunnel State Park and the Southwest Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics. It is designed to improve mathematics education in the nineteen divisions focusing on real world math scenarios and place-based learning principles found in our region's state parks. This goal will be accomplished by guiding sixty participating teachers through a three phase process in which they will create learning modules that focus on concrete examples of mathematical concepts and place-based learning. It was funded by a SCHEV grant. |
